Weather Wise: The Future of Weather

6:18 min

You may not realize it, but we’re living in the golden age of weather flying—and things are only going to get better. So what can we expect in the years to come? In this final installment of our Weather Wise video series, we take a look at how technology will change the experience of weather planning and flying.

Engine Out! From Trouble to Touchdown

9:19 min

Responding to a simulated engine-out during training is one thing. Responding to a real engine-out is another, and as pilots we should know how to respond to ensure our chances of a safe landing. In this video, we discuss best practices for responding to an engine failure in cruise and on takeoff, as well as ways to help prevent an engine failure from happening in the first place.

Weather Wise: Awareness Aloft

7:24 min

Cold weather airports

2:40 min

Frigid temperatures require special attention, and that goes beyond preheating at some airports. We'll look at airports where altitude corrections are required for safe instrument approaches.

Weather Wise: Beyond Go/No-Go

9:22 min

We’re usually able to make fairly solid go/no-go decisions well in advance of a planned flight. But when conditions are marginal, the decision to launch, postpone, or cancel can be tricky. In this installment of the AOPA Air Safety Institute’s Weather Wise video series, we look at factors to consider when the weather complicates your plans.

Margins of Safety: Avoiding Power-On Stalls

8:14 min

Year after year, unintended stalls are among the leading causes of fatal aviation accidents. The "departure" or "power-on" stall is practiced during flight training, but in a controlled, coordinated scenario at a high altitude. Unexpected stalls during takeoffs or go-arounds are sudden, sharp, and frightening. At low altitude, even a brief loss of aircraft control may be unrecoverable. This video explains the differences in power-on stall training versus real-world scenarios, the aerodynamics of how stalls occur during takeoffs and go-arounds, and techniques pilots can use to prevent them.

But with the sheer amount of weather information available these days, how can we be sure we’re getting what we need? In this short video—the first in a series focused on practical weather flying for pilots—we look at strategies for sorting through the chaff and pinpointing the information that really matters for your upcoming flight.
