Description
The Congressional Flying Club is a non-profit organization devoted to providing its members a safe, reliable and affordable means to fly General Aviation aircraft. The name comes from the location of the club's original founding at Congressional Airport in Rockville, Maryland (now Congressional Shopping Center). It was a group of Civil Air Patrol members, including Eberhard Trams, who founded the Congressional Flying Club in the late 1940's. To this day, the flying club continues to be associated with the Civil Air Patrol through the Montgomery Senior Squadron at Montgomery County Airpark.
When Congressional Airport was closed to make way for the shopping center in 1956, the Congressional Flying Club and Civil Air Patrol squadron moved out to Davis Airport in Laytonsville Maryland (W50). A few years later, they moved to the new Montgomery County Airpark where the club and CAP squadron still thrive today.
Today the Congressional Flying Club and Montgomery Senior Squadron are still very active and vibrant organizations. Many members participate in the monthly fly-ins to interesting destinations. The majority of the club's planes make the annual journey to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the mecca of American General Aviation, for the AirVenture air show. And you can always find a quorum of members after our weekly meetings at a designated restaurant sharing the infamous "there I was at 12,000 feet" hangar stories.
