AOPA will be closing at 2:30 p.m. EDT, August 29th, in observance of the Labor Day Holiday. We will reopen on 8:30 a.m. EDT, Tuesday, September 2nd.
Thank you for your interest in hosting a Rusty Pilots program and for your commitment to bringing lapsed pilots back into the GA community. The success of the Rusty Pilots program (“Rusty Pilots”) depends on a solid partnership between AOPA and the host flight school or flying club. If you are interested in supporting this program by hosting and presenting a Rusty Pilots presentation, please take a look at the partnership expectations below. By partnering with the AOPA Rusty Pilots program, you will be rewarded with marketing support and increased exposure for your flight school or club. If you would like to host a program, please submit a request form below.

Priority for partnership will be given on a first-to-request basis to flight schools/flying clubs with at least a fleet of two aircraft. If multiple qualified flight schools in an area request participation, priority will be given on a first-to-request basis. The second flight school will then be provided the opportunity to participate at a later date (a minimum of 6 weeks after the first presentation).
AOPA has built and designed Rusty Pilots as a PowerPoint presentation. You will need a projector and a computer, but no written material is required.
The presentation was designed to be completed in under three hours.
Rusty Pilots was designed to address recent changes in the world of flying. Regulatory discussions include light sport aircraft, medical requirements, airspace, and common regulations. Weather includes TAFS, METARS, internet briefing, and FSS/ Flight Watch. Operation discussions include traffic patterns, communications, incursion avoidance, and pilot responsibilities.
AOPA requires that the Rusty Pilot Program is a No Charge event. However, we encourage all participating flight schools to enroll their rusty pilots in any courses or ground schools offered by your Flight School or Flying Club. Any flights, including the completion of the rusty pilots Flight Review, is not affiliated with the Rusty Pilots program and can be performed at the normal Flight School/Club rate.
The host flight school or flying club must provide a certified flight instructor or a certified ground instructor to present the Rusty Pilots material.
The Rusty Pilot presentation meets the requirements of FAR 61.56 for 1 hour of ground instruction. The sign-off is an incentive for rusty pilots to overcome the Flight Review hurtle, as well as an encouragement to complete the flight portion with your school/club. For this reason, we ask that you honor the presentation as the ground portion of the Flight Review. As always, it is the final authority of the Flight Instructor completing the review in the airplane to identify the Rusty Pilot as safe.
We generally ask for 8 weeks notice for proper promotion of a Rusty Pilots event. However, if there are a lack of presentations in your area, we can expedite the event within 5 weeks.
Because of our marketing research and promotional strategies, we must space events by distance and by time. Generally, we require that two separate events be separated by either 100NM or 6 weeks. Presentations are scheduled on a first come first serve basis, and your presentation is not official until we have received all the requested paperwork.
The purpose of Rusty Pilots is to encourage the completion of a flight review for pilots whose experience has lapsed while reintroducing them to the aviation community. Your flight school or club must have aircraft available for rental (or, in the case of a flying club, you must be accepting new members) and flight instructors on staff. You must also have adequate space to present to a group of at least 25 pilots.
Unfortunately, the full Rusty Pilots presentation is only accessible to approved presenters who have completed the required MOU contract. We have a collection of Sample Slides available HERE.
