Aug. 30 - The Skandia sound suppression kit has been installed, other new parts are in the bin awaiting installation, and the crew at Air Mod in Batavia, Ohio, is busily fabricating new cabin sidewalls on the 2001 AOPA Sweepstakes Bonanza.
At last report, Dennis Wolter and his Air Mod staff were replacing the original cabin sidewall panels with a custom-made ones fabricated out of .020-inch thick aluminum. This permits Wolter to create custom armrests and other special touches.
The seat adjuster mechanisms for the pilot and copilot seats have been rebuilt by G. Nichols and Company of St. Clair, Michigan (810/329-7083), and the crew at Air Mod has invited AOPA Associate Editor Steve Ells to spend his Labor Day weekend turning wrenches.
Ells will be donning his mechanic's uniform to install a new set of landing gear retraction rod boots from Performance Aero in Grass Valley, Illinois, a set of Camloc cowling fasteners from Skybolt Aerospace Fasteners in Leesburg, Florida, and a set of Medeco locks from Aircraft Security and Alert in Dallas. Ells will also be changing the engine oil and adding Exxon Elite 20W-50 Since this will be the first actual work Ells has attempted for at least a year, one member of the Air Mod staff has been assigned to supervise him at all times. We'll be watching to see if he attempts to expense a manicure after getting his hands dirty.
