July 5 - That two-tone red and white fuselage, combined with the striking gold and silver accents, really pleases the eye of the beholder. After a lot of preparatory work installing and upgrading the powerplant and avionics, Murmer Aircraft Services has finally turned the Sweepstakes Bonanza loose on the world with a gleaming new exterior.
Earlier this week, Steve Tolson of Murmer Aircraft was predicting that the exterior refinish would be done by July 5, a full day ahead of schedule. Which means that by the time you read this, AOPA Editor at Large Tom Horne will once again be preflighting the Sweeps Bonanza, this time for a quick trip north to Salina, Kansas, for the final touches on the TKS ice prevention system.
As the boom of fireworks rattled the windows of my motel in Bend, Oregon, late on July 4, a quick gaze at the Weather Channel showed that Horne may enjoy a window of good weather along his route if he launches on Friday. Check this spot next week for Horne's latest report on flying the Sweeps Bonanza.
