June 21 - By now it's common knowledge that the AOPA Sweepstakes Bonanza has a larger engine and a turbonormalizer installation that improves the high-altitude and top-speed capabilities. But in order to stretch the lower end of the operating spectrum, AOPA turned to Beryl D'Shannon Aviation Specialties Inc. BDS is a company that specializes in Beech upgrades.
BDS flap and aileron gap seals and vortex generators were chosen to improve the low speed performance of the Sweeps Bonanza. Gap seals improve the efficiency of the ailerons, adding safety by firming up slow speed roll response. In addition, these gap seals prevent the high-pressure air below the wing from bleeding into the low-pressure air above the wing. The result is less drag and a more efficient wing.
BDS vortex generators increase low-speed stability and reduce stall speeds. Testing has shown that power-off straight ahead stall speeds decrease by up to 7 knots. Installing the BDS STCed gap seals and vortex generators on the Sweeps Bonanza has created a much safer airplane, especially during the takeoff and landing phases of flight. Oh yeah, along with more safety and better handling, there's a 100-pound gross weight increase with the installation of a set of BDS vortex generators.
Pilots who attended AOPA's fifth regional fly-in of the year in Chino, California, shared the excitement of the people, airplanes, and educational events via social media. See what they were saying.
