AOPA President Phil Boyer on Wednesday night paid tribute to those who led the fight to preserve St. Petersburg's Albert Whitted Airport (SPG). During a Pilot Town Meeting in Tampa, Boyer officially recognized the efforts of the two local organizations that led the fight to keep the airport open—the Albert Whitted Airport Advisory Committee and the Albert Whitted Preservation Society—presenting certificates of recognition to Ruth Varn, president of the advisory committee and head of the Albert Whitted Political Action Committee, and Terri Griner, president of the Albert Whitted Preservation Society.

Earlier in the day, Boyer met with St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker. "Now that the voters in St. Petersburg have spoken, it's time to move ahead," said Boyer. "And AOPA has a lot of resources that can help St. Petersburg as it looks to improve Albert Whitted."

More than 300 pilots turned out to hear and speak with Boyer. In addition to the Albert Whitted issue, Boyer discussed the ongoing concerns AOPA has about security restrictions on aviation and what the association is doing to counter them. He showed the pilots AOPA's new Real-Time Flight Planner and how it can help them navigate around not only restricted airspace, but weather as well.
