A recent Santa Clara State of the County address called for a study to close Reid-Hillview Airport so the land could be used for nonaviation purposes. This is at least the third time a study has been recommended as a means to close the airport. On Feb. 5, AOPA Vice President of Airports Bill Dunn wrote Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors Chairman Pete McHugh, opposing any effort to close Reid-Hillview. The countywide reliever airport system and San Jose International depend on the airport, which is obligated by federal funds to remain open. The FAA has told AOPA that it will not allow the airport to be closed. Reid-Hillview will be a key airport this fall when AOPA Expo 2008 comes to San Jose. AOPA already has discussed the threat to the airport with the San Jose Convention and Visitors Bureau.

As the cold weather chills AOPA’s Headquarters in Frederick, many of us are inside generating new resources for flying clubs.
In my house, every Friday night is “Movie Night.” While the movies are rarely educational (I don’t think I learned anything from the Lego Movie), we look forward to the weekly opportunity to spend time together. Why not use the same concept for your Flying Club (with the addition of education, of course)?
AOPA Flying Club Manager Kelby Ferwerda posted the following on the AOPA Flying Club Facebook Page: “Recently I’ve talked with quite a few Flying Clubs about maintaining social activity through the cold winter months. Some clubs host Holliday Parties, others have Potluck Movie Nights. What does your club do to keep members involved during the chilly months?”
