Kansas is approaching the conclusion of a 10-year comprehensive transportation plan adopted by the governor and state legislature in 1999. Now, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius has appointed a task force, called Kansas T-LINK, to help develop a new strategic approach for future transportation needs.
The new plan will include funding for the state’s aviation program, which currently receives about $3 million a year. The funding must be maintained and increased in the new transportation plan.
The 143 public-use airports in the Kansas Aviation System continue to have many infrastructure needs. The Kansas Airport Improvement Program has helped with many of these, including runway projects; taxiway and ramp projects; and facilities, lighting, communications, automated weather, and navigation equipment.
The task force will be conducting a series of meetings throughout the state in the upcoming weeks. [See the task force’s Web site for details.]
AOPA encourages you to attend those meetings and let state policy makers know that the state’s aviation system is important to you! Your presence, and your voice, will help determine future aviation-related legislation in the Kansas legislature.
