AOPA Aviation Summit has what you need to know to arrive at the aviation medical examiner’s office with confidence: Federal Air Surgeon Dr. Fred Tilton, fitness specialist Mike Torchia, and celebrity Montel Williams are all coming to Summit to promote healthy living among pilots.
Get advice from these leading names in health and fitness about what you can do to stay in tip-top shape. AOPA has prepared an array of health activities, services, and presentations at Summit to promote a healthy lifestyle—all tailored to the special needs of pilots.
You can also take advantage of free health checks and information at the Health Pavilion, a dedicated area in the Tampa Convention Center Exhibit Hall for health screenings and aeromedical resources.
Fitness specialist Mike Torchia, whose client list includes Al Pacino, Matt Damon, and Kevin Spacey, also will be at the Health Pavilion with his fitness team. Torchia, the founder and president of Operation Fitness in Beverly Hills, Calif., teaches techniques focused on optimum physical fitness and creation of a healthier lifestyle. He will be giving presentations throughout Summit about staying fit, including such aviation-related presentations as “Exercising in the air” on Nov. 5 and “Perfect your posture with stretching techniques for pilots” on Nov. 6.
Check your own health with screenings from Cigna; get an aortic aneurysm screening from Cook Medical; and sign up for a discounted heart scan with EDT Heartscan. Montel Williams will be on hand to sign copies of his latest books, Living Well and Living Well Emotionally, on Thursday, Nov. 5, and Friday, Nov. 6. Williams also will give wellness-related presentations throughout Summit.
The pavilion also offers resources specific to aviation: Find out about special issuance authorizations from the FAA and other certification issues from the AOPA Medical Certification staff. Southern Aeromedical Institute will provide information about hypoxia training at their facility in Melbourne, Fla.
Also at the pavilion, you can find products to help you lose weight and check out Medi Weight Loss, BSN Supplements, Cybex, and Busy Body Gyms to Go. Enter for a chance to win one of many daily giveaways, including a Nonin Pulse Oximeter!
Summit takes place Nov. 5 through 7 in Tampa, Fla., and expands on the popular AOPA Expo. Register for Summit today!
As the cold weather chills AOPA’s Headquarters in Frederick, many of us are inside generating new resources for flying clubs.
In my house, every Friday night is “Movie Night.” While the movies are rarely educational (I don’t think I learned anything from the Lego Movie), we look forward to the weekly opportunity to spend time together. Why not use the same concept for your Flying Club (with the addition of education, of course)?
AOPA Flying Club Manager Kelby Ferwerda posted the following on the AOPA Flying Club Facebook Page: “Recently I’ve talked with quite a few Flying Clubs about maintaining social activity through the cold winter months. Some clubs host Holliday Parties, others have Potluck Movie Nights. What does your club do to keep members involved during the chilly months?”
