June 1, 2010
By Julie Summers Walker
June is the month to celebrate your dad and what better way to honor the old man than with an aviation event, cross-country, or road trip? From the unusual to the sublime—if you have a pilot in your midst, you can go just about anywhere with your father. Enjoy dad this month at one of these events or check our online calendar for other ideas.
3JC: Freeman Field Junction City, Kansas
Take dad to America’s heartland to enjoy the National Biplane Fly-In, a celebration of antique, vintage, and modern biplanes. This event carries on the Great Biplane Expo tradition on the grass and asphalt runways of Freeman Field. Join in the tradition June 3 through 6.
BFI: Boeing Field Seattle, Washington
If your dad is into helicopters, this is the place to be June 19. The American Heroes Airshow is the country’s only admission-free, helicopter-only aviation event. Helicopters from law enforcement, emergency medical services, the military, and more are on display at the Museum of Flight.
LPR: Loraine County Regional Airport Elyria/Avon, Ohio
What better way to celebrate your dad but by honoring his favorite tool—duct tape. Yes, there’s a festival for duct tape on Father’s Day weekend June 18 through 20. The small town of Avon, Ohio, in Loraine County is the Duct Tape Capital and each year celebrates by showcasing all things made of and with duct tape. LPR serves the northeast Ohio region.
National Air and Space Museum Dulles, Virginia
Join AOPA and the National Air and Space Museum June 19 for Become A Pilot Day. On display will be a great variety of aircraft including AOPA’s 2010 sweepstakes aircraft, the Fun-to-Fly Remos GX. Take a museum tour, fly a flight simulator, and find out how you can become a pilot for a day!
0A7: Hendersonville Airport Hendersonville, North Carolina
Antique cars, hot rods, airplanes, and food, oh, my. The Western North Carolina Museum Air Fair and Fly-In offers everything you and your dad need to celebrate his favorite things. Organizers say to come and enjoy this “old-timey airport” June 5 and 6.
Fantasy of Flight Polk City, Florida
It’s free admission for dads at Florida’s most exciting aviation museum, the Fantasy of Flight near Lakeland, Florida. The free admission is available to dads with an accompanying paying guest June 17 through 20.

AOPA Director of Publications and Managing Editor for AOPA Pilot and Flight Training, Julie Summers Walker joined AOPA in 1998. She is a student pilot still working toward her solo.
Safety and Education,
The Flying Physicians Association (FPA) has become the latest group to lend support to third-class medical reform and urge government officials to speed up their review of the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM). The NPRM would expand the number of pilots who could fly without needing to obtain a third-class medical certificate, a standard that has been successfully used by sport pilots for a decade.
California pilot Christopher Braun has created a revamped version of the cleco plier that is said to be lighter and more ergonomic.
There is no shortage of pilots in eastern Washington, but there does seem to be a scarcity of clubs in that part of the country.
