Pilots whose aircraft were registered in May of any year must apply for re-registration by July 31 to apply online.
As part of an effort to update its aircraft registry, the FAA is requiring pilots to re-register their aircraft on a specific schedule. The latest group should have received a letter from the FAA that contains the re-registration notice, along with the code to use when re-registering online. If an owner with a May registration misses the July 31 deadline, he or she could risk being grounded when the aircraft’s current certificate expires Sept. 30.
AOPA encourages these owners to re-register as soon as possible to ensure that they receive their new registration before the current one expires. The fastest way to re-register is to visit the FAA’s website and enter the N number and re-registration code to begin the process. One also can re-register by mail. Applications submitted after the July 31 deadline will have to be submitted by mail, and the FAA cannot guarantee that pilots re-registering after the deadline will receive their new registration in time.
The FAA believes that as many as a third of the aircraft records on its registry may be out of date or inaccurate, and is establishing a system of three-year recurrent registrations for aircraft to improve the accuracy of records. It is contacting pilots about upcoming registration windows using the information in the registry, so aircraft owners should check their aircraft registration information online to make sure the FAA has up-to-date information, including the address. When is your re-registration due?
Owners of aircraft with June registrations should have received their re-registration notices for the re-registration window that begins August. If your aircraft was registered in June and you have not received your notice, check their aircraft registration information online to make sure the FAA has up-to-date information. The window for re-registration for this group will close Oct. 31.
