Synthetic vision is now a reality on the iPad. WingX, one of the more popular moving-map applications, announced this week that it has added the computer-generated view out the window to its offerings.
The technology takes the app’s terrain database, airport database, and obstacle database, and wraps them into a powerful piece of situational awareness. Users have the ability to scroll the display as they like, but it also can be tagged to the current location via the iPad’s integrated GPS, or an external model.
WingX also worked with Levil Aviation to include a new attitude heading and reference system (AHRS) to drive the synthetic vision. With this capability, WingX can provide the synthetic vision wirelessly. This service requires an additional piece of hardware that costs $750.
An application update will be available this month. Synthetic vision requires an additional $99 annual subscription.
