The Air Force has released the final environmental impact statement (FEIS) on its proposal to create the White Elk Military Operations Area (MOA) in eastern Nevada. Pilots are urged to review the FEIS and submit comments by June 20.
The MOA has been proposed for airspace west of the existing Gandy MOA near Reno, Nev., and would constitute a westward expansion of the Utah Test and Training Area. The Air Force proposed the additional MOA because, it said, existing special-use airspace cannot contain operations “due to scheduling priorities and training demands.” The MOA would be established from 14,000 feet msl, or about 5,000 feet agl, to Flight Level 180.
AOPA is reviewing the document, will submit formal comments, and urges members to comment on the proposed MOA.
The association has notified the Air Force of concerns that the proposal would limit the altitudes available to general aviation aircraft on V-269. It also could have an impact on glider operations and summer soaring events. The Air Force has said that it would modify the schedule to mitigate the impact on glider events.
Members are encouraged to review the FEIS and submit comments by the June 20 deadline. Please also send a copy of your comments to AOPA.
