The FAA is seeking King Air pilots to participate in a simulation study assessing airport infrastructure requirements for supporting localizer performance with vertical guidance to a decision altitude of 200 feet (LPV 200) approach operations by Approach Category A and B airplanes. The study’s goal is to make precision approaches available to more runways, improving safety of operations.
Pilots must be current in any model of King Air (BE90 through BE350), and be instrument-rated with a current medical certificate, without a night flight or color signal control restriction.
The first phase of the research is under way at the Flight Safety International King Air Learning Center at Atlanta International Airport.
A stipend of up to $250 is available to pilots who complete the study, which takes about five hours, including preflight and post-flight briefings.
Recruitment is being conducted by Mitre Corp.’s Center for Advanced Aviation System Development (CAASD). Those who apply will be scheduled for one five-hour evaluation session at the FSI Learning Center.
Preflight questionnaires on previous experience will be completed before starting the evaluation, which will include about four hours of simulator time spent flying instrument approaches which can be logged against instrument currency requirements.
Pilots will be paid a $150 stipend for participation and $100 as a completion bonus. Transportation and housing during the study are not included.
To participate and be paid in this research, pilots must provide their Social Security number. The protection of this information is of the utmost importance and will be handled accordingly.
Applicants should bring a government-issued ID (passport, driver’s license, military ID) in addition to pilot and medical certificates. Applicants must successfully complete the qualification training at the beginning of the study to participate. Participants must certify that they are drug and alcohol free.
Individual pilots and their input to the study will not be identified.
