A first-ever meeting of women members of the AOPA Airport Support Network had director Joey Colleran upbeat about her program’s future.
“This group of volunteers is exciting to be around,” she said.
The March 10 session took place during the twenty-third International Women in Aviation Conference in Dallas, Texas.
The participants shared their experience organizing their local airport supporters, rallying airports’ neighbors to the cause, and educating their communities about the economic and local public service contributions made by airports and general aviation.
“The meeting not only covered important topics such as these, but it provided the chance to learn about some of the exciting initiatives these dedicated pilots are involved in,” Colleran said. “Hosting airport open-house events, inviting kindergarteners to a day at the airport, running for airport boards, hosting a free week-long female flight academy, and being involved in the Air Race Classic—this group of volunteers is exciting to be around.”
With more than 2,400 volunteers active in the Airport Support Network, working at the grass roots of local advocacy initiatives, Colleran encouraged AOPA members—women and men—to inform prospective volunteers of opportunities to join the 137 women who serve as ASN volunteers.
“Through the Airport Support Network, we work on numerous issues each year, providing all AOPA members with resources and guidance to keep airports open and safe,” Colleran said.
