Teen AOPA AV8RS members can hear tales of rugged Arctic flying from the stars of Flying Wild Alaska, jam with flying musicians, and get advice from instructors about learning to fly—for free—at AOPA Aviation Summit.
AOPA AV8R members are invited to enjoy a day of fun learning activities and an opportunity to talk with celebrity pilots Oct. 13 in Palm Springs, Calif., during Summit. They will receive free admission, including free entry to the AOPA AV8RS learning track and exhibit hall as well as opportunities to win prizes. Membership in AOPA AV8RS is free to teens ages 13 through 18.
The learning track, which runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Palm Springs Convention Center, includes a chance to meet celebrity pilots from Discovery Channel’s Flying Wild Alaska and Hollywood’s Dave Coulier. It kicks off with a jam session with the Flying Musicians, so AV8RS should take an instrument to join in. At 10:30 a.m., pilots-to-be can meet with flight instructors face-to-face and ask questions about anything from how to choose an instructor to what one can do with a pilot certificate after passing the checkride.
Teens will have a chance to meet up and talk with the pilots of Flying Wild Alaska at 11 a.m. and get Hollywood’s Dave Coulier’s take on being “Inspired to Fly” at 1:30 p.m. At 2:30 p.m., John Ponts and Luke Hickerson of the Discovery Channel’s Flying Wild Alaska will share their flying stories.
If AV8RS attend the Oct. 13 event as part of a group, AOPA will also provide one free adult admission. For more information about taking a group, email AOPA. AOPA Aviation Summit takes place Oct. 11 through 13. To facilitate registration, AOPA encourages teens to join AOPA AV8RS prior to Oct. 11 online. Tom Haines’ ‘Waypoints’ column on the ADS-B debate received a lot of response from members who, like the author, see its promise.
