Freeflight Systems, a provider of NextGen avionics, announced it had received FAA technical standard order (TSO) authorization for its new RANGR FDL-978-RX ADS-B transceiver.
The $5,495 unit will provide both Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) In and Out capability as well as optional Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) GPS. It interfaces with all existing Mode A, Mode C, or Mode S transponders, letting pilots view FIS-B weather and TIS-B traffic inputs on compatible multifunction displays. To date, Freeflight says the RANGR will work with Garmin’s GMX 200 and MX 20 and Chelton’s multifunction displays. More approvals for use with additional displays will come in the future.
With the addition of the company’s Wi-Fi module, the information can be shown on iPads. The RANGR kit comes with a 978 MHz antenna and wiring. Freeflight says that the unit provides full ADS-B functionality in a single box, and also allows for an upgrade path going forward.
