AOPA will urge the FAA and the Air Force to mitigate the impact on general aviation’s use of three Victor airways when two temporary military operations areas (TMOAs) are activated in northern Michigan and Wisconsin in June. Members are encouraged to review the proposal and submit comments by March 1 as provided below.
The Air Force proposes to establish the Sentry and Ironwood TMOAs to support Exercise Northern Sentry. The TMOAs would be in effect June 17 to 28 from 6,000 feet mean sea level up to but not including Flight Level 180 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. as described in this notice. A similar proposal proceeded in June 2012.
AOPA will again request that the FAA’s Minneapolis Air Route Traffic Control Center work in collaboration with the Air Force to mitigate the impact on general aviation pilots. Airways that could become unavailable for general aviation operations when the TMOAs are active include V-148 west of Gogebic-Iron County Airport in Ironwood, Mich., V-191, and V-413 east of the airport.
AOPA submitted comments on the 2012 TMOA proposal, and encourages members to participate again in 2013 by describing the potential impact on their flight operations.

The Flying Physicians Association (FPA) has become the latest group to lend support to third-class medical reform and urge government officials to speed up their review of the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM). The NPRM would expand the number of pilots who could fly without needing to obtain a third-class medical certificate, a standard that has been successfully used by sport pilots for a decade.
A survey of flying doctors found that 80 percent favor third class medical reform.
