The Air Force has scheduled a series of public scoping meetings in February on the environmental impact of a proposal to relocate its 18th Aggressor Squadron from Eielson Air Force Base to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) in Alaska.
Under the relocation plan, the Air Force would move 18 assigned F-16 aircraft and three backup F-16s from Eielson to JBER. The Air Force would also relocate 623 military personnel from Eielson, and transfer approximately 542 positions to JBER.
AOPA encourages members to participate in the public information sessions designed to identify the “full range of issues” as the Air Force proceeds to draft an environmental impact statement for the plan—which could add considerable high-speed military jet traffic to the already congested airspace around Anchorage, Alaska. Formal comments may be submitted at the meetings, or by March 1 as provided below.
The scoping meetings have been scheduled as follows: Feb. 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Alaska State Fairgrounds in Palmer, Hoskins Building. Feb. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m.at Tyson Elementary School, Anchorage. Feb. 6, from noon to 2 p.m.at the Fairbanks Princess Riverside Lodge, Fairbanks. Feb. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Fairbanks Princess Riverside Lodge, Fairbanks. Feb. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the North Pole High School, North Pole.

A House bill that would force FAA to go through the rulemaking process before imposing new policies for sleep disorders has passed a key committee.
The House has passed a bill requiring the TSA to consult stakeholders, including general aviation representatives, before making major changes to security policy.
Senators are demanding a written response from the Department of Homeland Security about unwarranted stops of general aviation aircraft by DHS and Customs and Border Protection.
