Baron Services has expanded the list of worldwide weather data available to application developers and avionics makers.
The Alabama-based producer of digital data distributed through the XM Satellite Weather service, and also utilized by various cockpit weather applications and avionics, has added an array of weather products with global coverage, including satellite-derived weather offering precipitation analysis in areas not served by ground-based radar.
Lightning data, infrared satellite imagery, winds aloft, and temperatures aloft are also now available globally; Baron also offers turbulence and icing data throughout North America. The company plans to expand the list of weather data products in the months to come.
For aviation application developers, the Baron application programming interface (API) utilizes common data formats and allows customizable, high-resolution views and automatic content updates. The data is delivered through an Internet connection.
Baron also serves pilots directly with Internet-based weather products available by subscription for online viewing.
Baron is meanwhile working in partnership with L-3 Communications on an upgrade of the National Weather Service Doppler radar network, upgrading 171 stations to a dual-polarization system that is able to distinguish precipitation size and shape.

So why call the Sirius Light Sport aircraft from TL Ultralight in the Czech Republic a “serious Sirius,” other than the play on words?
I have been flying for more than 40 years and own a well-equipped Cessna Skylane. I almost always file IFR in good weather and bad.
