New audio panel for experimentals ‘fills a void’

PS Engineering PDA360EX

General aviation intercom and audio system maker PS Engineering is offering aircraft homebuilders a new audio panel that it says “fills a void in the higher end audio panel market designed exclusively for the experimental aircraft.”

The Lenoir City, Tennessee-based manufacturer’s new PDA360EX audio panel features its IntelliAudio technology, optimizing operation at reduced cost. Work began on the unit “shortly after the introduction of the FAA-Approved PMA450 Audio Panel during AirVenture 2014,” PS Engineering said in a news release.

“The response to our Dimensional Sound (IntelliAudio) has been phenomenal, but the certified PMA450 has more functionality than the homebuilders needed,” said company founder and CEO Mark Scheuer.

“The average homebuilder does not need Marker Beacon Receiver, cockpit speaker amplifier or use of more than a 4 seat intercom. Eliminating unnecessary capabilities helps to reduce the cost of this uncertified audio panel,” the company said.

The PDA360EX digitally processes audio from multiple communication radios, allowing the pilot to set Com 1 and Com 2 audio “in nine unique positions within a stereo headset.”

PS Engineering set a goal to offer “the ultimate audio panel for the experimental aircraft.” Standard capabilities include IntelliAudio, IntelliVox automatic squelch, Bluetooth, and a USB charger, the company said.

Bluetooth implementation in the PDA360EX can be used for entertainment and telephone, providing caller ID, cell phone battery status, and front-panel control of sidetone and volume control. The pilot can answer the phone by pressing an answer button on the PDA360EX, the company said.

The built-in 10-watt USB charger accommodates “the increased popularity of mobile personal electronic devices, such PDAs, iPhones, and iPads,” PS Engineering said.

The PDA360EX lists for $2,095, and is “plug-and-play” with the PMA5000EX audio panel and the Garmin GMA240, helping to reduce the cost of upgrading. The unit is available for immediate delivery from authorized PS Engineering dealers.
