AOPA is notifying pilots of a temporary control tower closure at Detroit’s Coleman A. Young Municipal Airport during work to remediate mold within the tower.
The closure began Dec. 7 and is expected to end Dec. 11. A number of airport facilities and services will be unavailable or operating in a restricted manner during that period as detailed in notams.
The FAA has advised pilots that the airport’s instrument landing system (ILS) has been set for the Runway 15 ILS, and will be unmonitored. Runway lights have been set at step three.
Airborne aircraft should contact Detroit Approach Control on 134.3 MHz. Pilots have been instructed to use the published unicom frequency in lieu of control tower frequencies. See current notams.
Pilots should obtain clearances and make cancellations with flight service on 122.2 MHz, or by phone at 888/766-8267.
Basic advisories about the airport closing and service limitations are included in ATIS broadcasts. The ATIS will not be providing weather information, so it is listed as out of service in a notam. For current weather conditions pilots can call flight service or use Detroit Metro’s weather broadcast on 133.675 MHz.
As always, it is recommended that operators review notams frequently for the most up-to-date information on the closure and the date and time of the control tower’s reopening, said Rune Duke, AOPA director of airspace and air traffic.
