New membership option serves professional pilots

Professional pilots can’t afford to get grounded

An AOPA membership option debuting at NBAA 2015 on November 17 is designed to help protect professional pilots’ certificates, medical certificates, and careers.

The AOPA Pro Pilot membership includes enrollment in Pilot Protection Services Plus for legal and medical services and a loss of medical certificate disability insurance policy, as well as other member benefits.

Pilot Protection Services Plus is an AOPA member-exclusive product designed to protect a professional pilot’s certificate and medical in a way that company coverage may not. AOPA Pro Pilot members’ loss of medical certificate disability insurance policy offers $7,500 in lump-sum coverage. The insurance is stackable and portable, and promises quick payout of claims. Policyholders also will benefit from aviation medical advocacy, and additional coverage is available for purchase. Additonally, Pro Pilot members will have access to protection for them and their loved ones in the air and on the ground with term life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance.

Pro Pilot members also receive 12 issues of AOPA Pilot Turbine Edition (print and digital), 12 digital issues of Flight Training magazine, access to online tools and resources, and exclusive access to AOPA’s Pro-Pilot hotline. Visit the website or call 800-872-2672 to learn more.

Four tips for purchasing a turbine aircraft

Get the best rate, terms for the airplane you want

Money is available and interest rates are generally low. However, you need to take some things into consideration before purchasing your next turbine aircraft.

• Purchase an airplane that is no older than 20 years to get the most competitive rate and terms.

• Make sure you and the lender are valuing the airplane the same way. Certain “add-ons” may not merit the same value to lenders as they do to the buyer.

• Put your best foot forward. The stronger you appear as a borrower, the lower the rates and more flexible the terms. For example, additional guaranties can get you better terms and a lower rate. Expect a higher rate and more restrictive terms if you do not provide a business or personal guaranty.

• Consider how long you intend to keep the loan and get comfortable with prepayment penalties if you can—or else, be prepared to pay more in rate or closing costs.
