Nonprofit aviation philanthropy The Sporty’s Foundation released an annual report for 2014 listing grants totaling $148,500 in support of flight training and maintenance training scholarships, aviation museums, the Boy Scouts of America, and other organizations.
Since its inception, that Sporty’s Foundation has provided more than $1 million to groups and organizations, in keeping with a commitment "to attract new market entrants wit both pilots and technicians," the charity said in a news release.
The foundation’s administrative costs are funded entirely by Sporty’s Pilot Shop, enabling all funds donated to the foundation to go to its programs.
"All of us who have enjoyed either a career in aviation, fly professionally or simply the ability to fly for fun are called to give back to the next generation," said Hal Shevers, Sporty’s founder and chairman. "We take that mandate very seriously."
The recipient of the largest grant in 2014 was the Experimental Aircraft Association’s EAA Flight Plan program that helps young people pursue flight training.
