Safety Pilot

Sorry to say that at this late date, we're still occasionally attempting to stay aloft on low-octane air--and just about the time you think you've heard it all, there's a different twist.

Avionics: AOA for GA is OK by FAA

Angle of attack indicators have long been regarded as essential in military, corporate, and airline cockpits--and a recent FAA letter could speed the adoption of these potentially lifesaving systems in light general aviation airplanes, as well.

A single FBO offers all this: aerial tours of the Grand Canyon; a chance to shoot down an aerial foe in mock combat using world-class Extra 330LT aerobatic aircraft; a flight school; and aircraft maintenance. View the video for more excitement than a casino.

Britain's Brawny Beagle

Why show up in an ordinary Cadillac when you could have brought a classic Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud limo? That's the sort of analogy that would describe taxiing up to the ramp in the rare Beagle B206, compared to any other light twin. The Beagle is radically different enough to swing the heads of even casual ramp lurkers.

Pilot Counsel:

A recent legal interpretation of FAR 91.130, "Operations in Class C airspace," by the FAA chief counsel answers a question about the two-way radio communications requirement for an aircraft departing a satellite airport in Class C airspace. (As a reminder, a satellite airport is any airport that exists within Class C or D controlled airspace, but is not the so-called "primary" airport on which the airspace is based. The satellite airport may or may not have an operating control tower.) This provides an opportunity to review the communications requirements for airports in controlled airspace (different controlled airspaces are depicted or coded on aeronautical charts), and helps us to better understand the interpretation.

Fly Well

For many, "England" and "fantastic food" should never appear in the same sentence. As a native, I dispute this egregious mischaracterization—there's darn good nosh to be had in the land of my birth. Granted, steak and kidney pie isn't to everyone's liking, but I am a fan and encourage you to sample this delicacy. It tastes great and will provide new respect for humble kidneys, whether wrapped in pastry or not. As more than 10 percent of Americans harbor kidney disease, please read on about this crafty killer.

Letters

Mike Collins touched my heart with his article "Honoring the Tuskegee Airmen" (December 2011 AOPA Pilot). Lt. Col. William Holloman III of the famed 332nd Fighter Group was a dear friend and passed away in 2010. Bill was a national treasure. Prior to his passing, he was looking forward to climbing back into a Stearman.
