I went to Nichols Field for the annual San Diego Ultralight Association Fly-In. The group there could not have been any nicer or more hospitable and I really enjoyed seeing all the ultralights on the ground and in the air. Nichols Field is only open to the public one day a year, so if you get an opportunity be sure to try it. It is a tricky landing with most aircraft coming in way to high and way to fast and they having to go-around. I was no exception and it took three tries to get it right. The trick is to extend your downwind and then use the hills and the little valley west of the runway as your glide slope. I would NOT try this landing in anything larger than an LSA.
