Three highly experienced CFIs, Joe, Louanne and Felicia, deliver instruction in a relaxed atmosphere. The planes are meticulously well-maintained, of course. Lessons/rental costs are competitive and reasonable. The facility has plenty of work space and good AC. Essential student supplies, instructional materials, plotters, E6Bs etc. are available for sale on site. These folks are steady, far-more-than-competent, and won't steer you wrong. This last has been confirmed to me over and over by my own excellent experience, as well as in conversations with the pilots I've met coming and going at Stenger Air or at other airports during practice. The older pilots with many 100s of flight hours always look you straight in the eye and say, "You're in the right place", or with obvious pride, "I'm Stenger-trained." As an older-than-average student I feel perfectly comfortable with the tone and steady pace of instruction. And, having observed the CFIs working with other students, I am impressed with their ability to deliver the curriculum in an encouraging way, one that imparts confidence. My sense is that all the students are making good progress. Though Lockhart Muni (50R) is a non-towered field, we regularly fly over to San Marcos (KHYI) class D airspace for practice at a towered airport, which has proven to be very good practice in a fairly busy pattern. One final note: It's a bit of a drive to Lockhart for me, about 45 minutes on HWY 183, keeping a sharp eye out for the Sheriff at Mustang Ridge, but well worth it. The drive is actually very valuable time for lesson prep and debrief. No doubt about it, Stenger Air is a first-rate destination for getting Private Pilot instruction. If you're in San Antone or Central Texas and want to learn to fly an airplane, you'd do well to come on down to Lockhart (the BBQ capital of TX!) and learn to fly Joe and the Stenger folks.
