The tower staff at this busy airport juggles GA with jet traffic very well on top of being friendly and professional. Parked with the friendly folks at Western Flight Services today and had lunch at The Landings. Food and service were great as usual. Try thier Peanut Butter Burger!

Go to Western if you fly in a small plane (i.e. not a Jet). Despite the lady at the front desk not knowing what a Bonanza was, the folks at Western (desk and ground crew) were very nice and didn't try to stick us with high fees, like a few years back. They were happy to tow us to the $3 county transient spots next door for our extended stay vs. paying $20 a night at their spots. I did buy 10 gallons of fuel to wave their fee, but got a night of parking out of that too. And yes, the County transient spots are finally back at Palomar, but there's only five. Usually full on the weekends, but available during the week.

I found the FBO Western to very helpful. They let us use a crew car and have great coffee and cookies. Fuel is expensive.

As of right now (9/10/2008), there is no temporary parking except at the big FBOs which really don't like to see piston planes on their ramps. In the past, there had been a transient parking area provided by the county with only a small overnight fee and no fee for day parking. Hopefully, the county parking area will return when the construction is completed.

I am home base here. As Below Western is a nice FBO but they seem to be planning the big glass palace developement like every other business on the field. Stay far away from the other FBOs. They do not want you unless you are in a jet. They charge SIGNIFIGANTLY more than Western for Avgas. There is no restaurant on this field and as far as mechanics and such they were all run out in the airport redevelopement. It is close to the coast.

CRQ is an excellent airport to access Beach Towns along Hwy. 101, and avoid some congestion closer into Los Angeles. We had excellent lunches at Carlsbad Village and Encinitas; both very convenient to CRQ. Landing uphill was a new experience as was taking off over the coast. Nice $100 hamburger destination. Palomar is great airport. Right now, though, there is a lot of construction going on and the itinerant parking area is adjacent to the construction site. My plane was clean when I got there and covered by dust and debris when I left. Also, the self service fuel island has been removed and no one knows if it will be back or not. I waited over an hour for fuel since one of the FBO's couldn't get their truck started and the other one was just inefficient.

For anyone that hasnt yet flown into CRQ. I called airport management regarding the Landing Fee indication on the AOPA Airport info page; there is no landing fee or tiedown for single engine, I didn't ask about twin or jet. Tiedown fee only applies for overnight & its a meer $3 for single. This has been a great resource and thanks to everyone else who's posted thier comments - they've been very helpful.

CRQ is a great place to go for a great trip. If you have buisness in the Oceanside area DON'T fly in anywhere else.....traffic is horrible. Great field.

The Palomar Airport Cafe is worth the trip. Good food/ Good Service/ Great View! Right outside our lunch table sat a French Fuga Jet, a Russian Yak, 2 Travel Airs, and a T-6 Texan. Now that's atmosphere! There is currently heavy construction on taxiway Alpha, so ground might have you get a bit creative w/ your taxi. Palomar Airport continues to be one of the great SoCal GA fields. ATC at Palomar is excellent!

Started my flying career 10 years ago at Palomar and what a wonderful airfield to learn at. A simple, yet sometimes crowded airport with some of the best controllers (for a small airport) around. Sometimes the runway can be difficult to spot when inbound from OCN. I suggest using the VOR to help get the correct 45 degree entry to the traffic pattern. Look for the powerplant as a reference point.

* On 3/27/03 at CRQ a 15 month long FAA Part 150 Noise Study was comissioned. There were a lot of people at the meeting with GA noise complaints. The public comment period of this study is very important, carries a lot of weight and needs representation by the flying community. This airport is being encroached upon by construction/development. If you are concerned about this, your Airport Support Network Volunteer is keeping an email list for updates on the Part 150 meetings, at carlsbadairport@hotmail.com

Two comments. Firstly, an excellent ATC operation, and particularly helpful to student pilots like myself. Secondly, the field is surprisingly difficult to see from overhead Oceanside field at about 3000 ft MSL (i.e. 1000 ft above Oceanside TPA). If told to report downwind for RWY 24 Rt traffic from this position, consider requesting vector to get on the 45.

A comment from someone a beginnner with some 100+ hrs, I have to say that ATC at Palomar was outstanding. I am still nervous visiting new airfields , but this facility made it easy and provided another learning experience for me. This airfiled seems to be real busy at weekends but this ATC unit will make the visit all the more enjoyable.

I am still nervous visiting new airfields , but this facility made it easy and provided another learning experience for me.
