I flew in yesterday and there was no traffic in the pattern or on the ground. This was a great airport to fly too but very hot during the summer. I ate at Rosa's Plane Food and it was excellent. The staff was excellent and service was quick. As for the airport, be aware of base legs because the Mexico border is just south of the airport. When I departed, I contacted El Centro Tower and they were very friendly and gave me the frequency for flight following with LA Center.

I have to say, that the food at Rosa's Plane Food was one of the finest meals I have ever had at an airport restaurant. The carne asada plate was just incredible, and the decor and service were top-notch. There is some pucker factor the first time you fly in here. When you are landing on 26 you are no more than about 150 yards from the border. Like everything else, once you figure it out there is no problem. I also want to say that the folks at the FBO were extremely friendly and hospitable, and were quick on the radio when calling Unicom. They got me a taxi to Mexicali ($5)and offered advice for a first-time visitor. And by the way, I would not plan on spending much time in Mexicali. There is not much to do there and they really don't cater to tourists.
