Nice airfield, very scenic, especially if you like to fly up and down the beach. If you're here during the summer, there are usually 3 or 4 banner towers up and down the shoreline 400-800 feet to keep an eye out for. Watch the crosswind (or lack of) on the approach- The trees close in to the field block the wind at the last minute, so if you have a good crab angle in you'll need to make some quick adjustments. Don't get too shallow on the approach, watch for power wires by the Lowes when landing RIGHT TRAFFIC 20.

This is a must see. Airport is nice and the AOPA facility is much appreciated. The National Park is great. I couldn't stop smiling. I recommend an off season visit. The Park Ranger spent a lot of time with us and commented that he rarely has the opportunity to speak with interested patrons in the summer months. He was knowledgeable and entertaining. Many nearby motels. We stayed at the Days Inn which couldn't have been more than a 1/2 mile from the airport. You can maneuver your plane on the ramp for a Photo with the Wright Monument in the background. Really glad we went.

I flew to First Flight today. Got in after the airport opened back up after the ceremony. Great place to go on December 17. Very nice runway, ramp, and tiedowns. The pilot lounge is terrific and well equipped. Nice clear approach, but on a windy day it could be difficult with rotors off of the trees. It was calm today. The wind component of the AWOS was not reporting, nor could I find a winsock so I used KMQI's wind and the flag at the museum for wind direction to select the landing runway. Norfolk controllers were very helpful as I overflew all their airspace. Very close to the monument and very nice airport. From the north along the beach it is actually easier to first spot the monument and path, then the airport as it is surrounded by trees.

Did my first flight in a Diamond DA 40 after getting the PPL. Pilgrimage for a new Pilot! Was a perfect clear day. Nice airport and good conditions of runway and approaches are easy for a low time pilot. The restricted areas did not allow me to go direct from KFAY and had to fly on a victor airway between them. The Washington and Cherry Point controllers were very busy but helped - could not offer flight following. AOPA facility on the field is very good except the log ins for the computers need better directions- to check weather etc. Was humbled to see where it all began, nice museum. Thanks to AOPA, this is a must go airport for all Pilots.
