I use this airport when visiting my son and his wife, who are stationed at Fort Hood. When approaching KILE, you need to be careful of the restricted/prohibited flying areas around Fort Hood. Gray Approach will warn and stear you clear of these and give you other helpful assistance. I've always had good experiences with Gray Approach. The FBO at KILE is usually only open during daylight hours and is closed on most Federal Holidays. Call ahead if coming in after hours. I found the FBO staff always courteous and friendly. 100LL is self-service and decently priced; transient pilots always have access to their aircraft after hours via the FBO gate nearby. GA planes can't land at Gray AAF and there is no 100LL at Gray. Call Gray Approach at least 20 miles out if you aren't flight following with ATC. Gray will get you into KILE. The FBO allows those of us with lots of luggage and packages to pull the vehicles picking us up right next to the plane via the vehicle entrance gate next to the fire station next door. I like flying into KILE, but Temple A/P is just down the road if you need maintenance, other kinds of services, and don't want to use Gray Approach to get into KILE. I'll be back to KILE often.
