On 24 Jan 2013, the Venice Lunch Bunch (VLB) consisting of 9 planes and 17 pilots planned on going to Albert Whitted (KSPG) for lunch..calling ahead, we found that the new FBO had instituted a $10 ramp fee, which would be waived if we purchased 5 gals of overpriced gas or a $5 discount on our food. In a feeble attempt to make $90, they cost the restaurant $200 and lost the $90 as well..we elected to go to Winter Haven (KGIF). No Fees, reasonable fuel and great food. Another good management decision on SPG FBO's part. Last year, the VLB visited SPG at least three times..what a great way to make a ghost town out of a use to be great airport..John D.

Just returned from KSPG . Terminal is airy, comfortable and stylish. The Hangar restaurant on the 2nd floor is open for B/L/D and draws-in the locals on weekdays and fliers, also, on weekends. Restaurant also has outdoor seating on a balcony overlooking the airfield. Bay Air FBO and other field services are very friendly and super-helpful and are great advocates for the region's many attractions. Reasonable ($15/night) parking fee, w/one night waved for buying gas (FS only and not cheap, but par for the area). My transponder died on the flight down and I needed the loaner (sent to me by Lancaster Avionics at KLNS) yellow-tagged before I could fly home. With very little notice, St. Pete' Avionics (not listed above as of this comment, and literally next door to PilotMall.com) were just as friendly and helpful as the folks at Bay Air and came out to my plane in a golf cart to take the loaner back to their shop for testing and to return it to the plane for install and check-out. They were even kind enough to take my original transponder back to the bench to find out what's wrong with it. Tower folks are also very friendly and helpful and provided great routing help when we were leaving with severe weather on its way in from the Gulf. Unfortunately, starting 1 Nov 2012, Bay Air is being replaced by one of the national chain FBOs despite protestations and votes by the locals at City Hall meetings. I don't know that I'll be making the long flight back this way in my PA28, but I know I'd like to patronize this place again.

My wife and I flew in to Whitted airport on Saturday morning to visit the Dali Museum and see some of the sights. We tied the plane down overnight at the St. Petersburg Flying Service FBO. The service was really great and they had a nice special, no ramp fee with 5 gallons of gas. They had me tied down and fueled in no time. We had lunch and drinks at the Hangar Restuarant which is right above the FBO. The view from the restaurant was spectacular as you could see the entire airport and the bay area. The food was really good. We walked across the street to the Dali museum and then cam back to the FBO and they drove us to our hotel, the Vinoy, which was about a mile away. There is so much to do in the area, you won't know where to start. If you haven't flown in here yet, you have to put this airport and FBO on our list, you won't regret it.

Yesterday a friend and I flew into Whitted airport from Venice...flew in under the airspace umbrella and had great scenery. ATC was friendly and congenial. FBO took care of us and parked us right in front of the Hanger Restaurant..another great experience..people running this airport understand how important being friendly is. I rate this airport up in my top 5 experiences, second only to maybe Okeechobee. Both have super views when coming in and going out. Look forward to my next visit. J. Donkus, Boiling Springs, PA

I've been flying to The Hangar restaurant, located on the field, for lunch or dinner. The food is phenomenal and reasonably priced, plus the atmosphere is excellent. Overall, the airport is very clean! I have dealt with the same controller on all my visits and he is just awesome to deal with. I don't know his name, but a bad controller can be a turnoff thankfully this is not the case. If you are flying a high performance plane use caution landing on 18/36, brush up on short field t/o and landings.

I flew to KSPG with a friend a few months ago and had a great experience. The FBO was clean and friendly, and within a ten-minute walk we were eating lunch at a cafe looking over the marina and Tampa Bay. Plenty of stuff to do in St. Pete, and this airport is a great way to go see some neat stuff. Also check out PilotMall.com's warehouse on the SW side of the field and get yourself some neat flying toys.
