We were able to fly into San Carlos and take CalTrain to/from downtown San Fran. The San Carlos CalTrain Station http://www.caltrain.com/ is a 15-20 min walk from KSQL and an easy 5-7 min cab ride. The Caltrain ticket was $4.75 and the ride took 45 min. Tie down at KSQL for a C172 was $10.00 per night. I have been into San Carlos many times over the last 2 years and I am very pleased each time. Full service fuel is reasonably priced compared to airports in my area (Lake Tahoe). The full service fuel operation is professional and efficient. In my experience, San Carlos Tower has been great and accommodating. KSQL is the closest airport for the general aviation guys/gals landing and wanting to spend a night or two in San Fran. Locate the cement plant to the south and east of the airport on the sectional before you go. The cement plant is often used by San Carlos Tower as a reporting point when inbound and entering on a right base for runway 30. I have never entered on a 45 or right downwind for 30 so I cannot help with that approach. Outbound I always take a right downwind departure making sure to stay out of Palo Alto and Hayward airspace as I make my way back home to the east. Keep in mind, San Carlos Airport is very difficult to locate when inbound from the east when the sun is going down and directly in your eyes. Dont be surprised to have big jets cross over the top of you as they fly into KOAK or KSFO. San Carlos is a great airport for general aviation!

GPS approaches to SQL are reauthorized effective 7/23/10. Two approaches now available GPS Z Rwy 30 and GPS Y Rwy 30.

RONHSE Note that the GPS approach to RWY 30 is not currently authorized. In IFR conditions, file to Palo Alto (PAO) or Hayward and once below the overcast cancel IFR and proceed VFR to SQL. A new GPS-Z with lower DA is working its way through the system and should be available soon.
