A wonderful flight and day at Big Bear. My son had the chicken fried steak and I had a fantastic corned beef hash and eggs at the Barnstorm Cafe, The airport staff helped arrange transportation and the fuel prices are some of the best in So Cal.

Flew up from San Diego and had a great chicken fried steak and eggs at Barnstorm Cafe. Absolutely gorgeous day up there, and the airport staff were very friendly and professional. Hope to be back there soon.

Landed 08 last Friday, popped a tire I did. I just wanted to post a thank you for Unicom, Ryan, and the gentleman running the repair shop all helping me out. Excellent, with everyone's help we had the tire back on the plane in no time. That's how we do it guys, well done.

In other countries, mountain flying is a separate certificate. Review before you go. Remember density altitude. Be ready to react to winds upon landing. Now's the time to use those rudder pedals! You can do it, I'm just saying prepare a little. If it's a warm summer day, don't overgross. If it's windy, don't go to sleep on final, etc. Course after fighting the winds, you might need a massage (Mtn Mobile Massage is awesome) but flying into the beautiful forest and lake town is worth it. It is not uncommon to take an instructor the first time you visit a mtn airport. In the winter, the airport does an excellent job keeping up the runway.

A beautiful place to go - we live close to the airport so pretty familiar with the area. Barnstorm has greatly improved over the past while both in terms of food quality and service (it was pretty grim at one point a few years back), and I can recommend the Crabcakes Benedict. If you fancy a change, Thelmas restaurant is close enough to walk to (take a left outside the airport and go about a block down, then go towards the main road, it maybe a 10 min walk at the most. Note that Thelmas only accept cash (but there's an ATM inside). My latest and greatest find was the Planetarium Instrument Museum which is on Division road - this is the road where the airport ends on the west side - don't even ask how that got to Big Bear... This guy has an amazing collection of planetarium instruments including Minoltas and Spitz (he's still looking for a Zeiss) and it's WELL worth a visit http://www.planetariummuseum.org/ - would be worth a call before walking there to make sure he's in. Lovely fellow, interesting exhibits. Take a right out of the airport, keep walking parallel to the airport, probably 20 minutes and worth it. As per other posts - watch DA, weight and CG. How can gas prices be one of the lowest in southern California??

On approaches and take offs, be sure to watch your airspeed indicator rather than by visual cues due to effects of density altitude. Don't forget the Mandarin Garden restaurant on the 2nd floor of the terminal(excellant mandarin chinese). This airport is also served by hourly local bus service and is handy for getting around Big Bear area.

On 5/25/09 I gave the Barnstormer a D- Well I call it like I see it and Easter Sunday we took another chance based on the comments left in Oct. and Nov. of 2009. The Barnstormer was good, same waitress much more helpful and the food arrived prompt and hot. The menu said they had lowered their prices as well. I don't pay too much attention to breakfast prices anyway when we are burning $80 worth of fuel to get here ha ha! Anyway, my kudos to the Barnstormer for turning things around.
