http://skytrail.info/new/home.htm This is a link recently discussed in an article in AOPA on line. I think this used to be Shaeffer Field, part of Camp Young, which was Gen Patton's HQ for the Desert Training Center. This airport would make a beautiful spot to start the air tour as described in the above article.

The middle of nowhere to be sure but definitely worth a stop to see the Patton museum since it's only about an hour from San Diego. The runway is not in the best of shape but landing was fine and a bit bumpy when you back taxi. No taxiway paralleling the runway so you'll probably have to back taxi after landing or prior to take off. The parking ramp is freshly paved and has plenty of tiedown space and chains available. No field office and no parking fees as per everyone we talked to around the field. Just park your plane, walk through the open gate, and get some show! Pattern is maybe a bit tight to stay clear of the hills to the north and south but nothing to worry about. I found the flag at the truck stop to be easier to see than the wind sock. Both are at the west end of the field. The Cafe is good and offers a wide choice of chow.

Nice little county airport in the middle of nowhere. The runway is in fair condition -- you will bump a bit when you back-taxi but landing was fine. The tie-down area is off of the numbers on runway 6 and there is plenty of room and tie-down chains are available. Once you are there, you have to check out the General Patton museum. The admission was $5 but it made the whole trip worthwhile. There is also a truck stop and the aforementioned Foster's Freeze. I ate ice cream and did not try out the cafe. All in all it is an easy trip from San Diego and a pleasant way to spend the afternoon.
