A friend and I flew down from Centennial (KAPA) this past weekend, to visit some friends who live nearby. I was a little concerned, at first, about the apparent lack of facilities. As indicated in the AF/D, there is no weather, what's left of the windsock is about a 3 foot strip of orange cloth, and the airport beacon is currently inoperative, along with runway lighting. As I came to find out, the friend we were visiting is one of the Trustees of the town council. He informed me that the town has received a grant and will be improving facilities starting in the Spring of 2012. At that time, all of the lighting and the windsock will be put back into service. He says they may even have enough in the grant for some form of automated weather, but that has not yet been confirmed. In the mean time, be prepared to back-taxi on the runway, as there are no separate taxiways. The parking apron is near the north end of the runway, and has tie-down rings for about eight single-engine aircraft. Be sure to bring your own ropes and chocks, though, as there are no facilities at the field, no FBO, no hangar, no RCO, no crew car, only recently resurfaced asphalt strip, run-up/turn-around areas at either end, and the parking apron. Best advice is to stop in Raton for fuel and call ahead for access, before flying in. Springer is only about 10 min. from Raton by C172. Otherwise, you'll be sitting on the ramp, waiting for the town's police officer to come open the gate for you. If you're not accustomed to remote airports, be prepared for the runway... The north end is higher than the south, but the paving also undulates along the length. You may not necessarily be able to see an aircraft at the north end from the south. It's not a fancy airport, but it's a nice one for where it's located. Also, be prepared... since it's not used very often, you'll likely find that everyone in town is interested to see who and what landed at their airport. As for lodging, we stayed at The Oasis Motel. As of this writing, The Oasis is currently the only place to stay if you want a private bathroom. The town also has a bed-and-breakfast, with shared amenities. Another motel was in the process of reconstruction when we were there, but no estimated date of completion. Double occupancy at The Oasis, including tax, was $57 and change. Reasonable rates for what you get. But, don't expect the Hilton. Go to Raton if you want something more modern (and more expensive). Also, there aren't any chain restaurants in town. Which is a good thing for those from the big city. Try some local fare, instead! As silly as it may sound, visit the drug store's lunch counter for one of the best cheeseburgers you'll find... topped with a really good green chili (It is New Mexico, after all) and choose a cherry phosphate to go with it. This is an authentic small-town drug store; their hours are 8-5:30, M-F, closed S-S. Springer is a great small-town experience. Enjoy the lack of complexity you'd suffer at larger airports!
