Two of us just recently visited in our Mooney during very windy conditions over a 3 day period and thoroughly enjoyed touring Monument Valley for the first time. I found all of the prior comments helpful and still spot on (need for ropes, availability of cables to tie into etc.) . I will add that the airport is very challenging; especially in windy conditions and would offer the following tips/suggestions based on my very limited experience their. Even during very windy days with gust into the 30-40 mph range, the winds were still calm or light (under 10 kts) in the early morning hours, but sometime between 10 and 11am the winds start picking up and almost always tended to be a 45-60 degree x-wind from the south west by midday where they stayed till they lightened back up late in the day. With significant winds out of the south, both landings and departures are challenging. The southerly winds create a significant downdraft coming off the adjacent terrain that you'll experience near the approach end of the runway. Given the steep grade of the runway, with ~100' difference between the bottom and top, there is no need to land on the numbers and would suggest aiming several hundred feet past them. For the same raesons would avoiding dragging it in to the runway and if you do get low consider keeping some extra speed to give counter the potential downdraft. You'll slow down very quickly landing uphill. Having witnessed several depatures of many C207 tour planes, a couple different turbo-prop twins including a King-Air and several Mooney's; all were visibly affected by a loss of altitude from the downdraft that was greater with stronger winds. Most effective way to minimize this IMO was a Vx climb out, gaining as much altitude as you could before you got to the downdraft and then climbing out at Vy. Past the early morning hours, all takeoff's I witnessed were with a quartering tail wind that got stronger as the day progressed, although with the steep downhill descent everyone was airborne by mid-field. All of this excitement though is avoidable by a morning arrival or departure. If you arrive with winds you're concerned about, consider landing at 0V7, Kayenta, located 18 mi to the south. Gouldings Lodge routinely picks up tour plane passengers from their when the winds/weather are two adverse for them to use the UT25 strip and I'd bet you could negotiate a pick up from them if you needed or wait it out till late in the day when winds calm down. Lastly, the dirt parking area is full of rocks sized from gavel to a couple inches in size. Taxiing into parking from uphill with low power and brakes is pretty safe but avoid taxing uphill into parking which will require high power and subject your prop to potential expensive damage. If at all possible, get help from others to pull to your plane out of parking onto the runway / commercial parking area before you start up - two of us alone could not budge our mid-sized Mooney - a third had us rolling. It was a great experience for us and wish the same to any one reading this.
