AOPA’s home in Frederick, Maryland, was squarely in the path of a massive winter storm that dumped snow by the foot and left local pilots and airport crews digging out for days. This brings to mind a little news you can use this week about an easy way to find out if airports along your route are closed, and winter flying tips from the AOPA Air Safety Institute. Even Sebring, Florida was on the chilly side, though near-freezing temperatures, Friday rain and gusty wind on Saturday didn’t douse all the fun at the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo, which hosted drones for the first time this year. Much progress has been made improving safety and reducing accidents in recent years. Flying clubs do much more than to rent aircraft at lower cost, though that is often the reason that pilots join in the first place. We visited one club (among many) where the enthusiasm is infectious. How do you catch a rogue drone? Another drone with a net is one way. We’ll also look at a drone large enough to ride in that made a splash in Las Vegas.
