Keeping pilots safe

AOPA has been at the forefront of accident prevention and flight safety since 1939 when our founders established our mission: making flying safer, more fun, and more affordable.

In 1950, AOPA created the AOPA Air Safety Foundation. In the 60 years since, the accident rate per 100,000 flying hours has dropped by an impressive 86% - in part because of the efforts of the Foundation. Today, the Air Safety Institute continues that tradition with award winning safety programs such as:

  • New live seminars and online webinars that reach over 40,000 pilots nationwide.
  • The largest provider of free online safety courses; tens of thousands of pilots take these programs monthly.
  • In depth accident analysis and research on topics such as technologically advanced aircraft, spatial disorientation, amateur built aircraft, and more.

The Air Safety Institute is the center for general aviation safety with the largest non-government accident database and a broader pilot outreach than any other resource. It is funded solely by grants and generous donations from pilots like you through the AOPA Foundation.
