The main outcome of a successful campaign will be an expansion of the efforts to raise public opinion about the important value and heritage of general aviation. II. Preserve and Improve America’s Community Airports
The origins of our nation’s GA airports are varied. The major impetus was the creation of the transcontinental Air Mail Service after World War I. Regardless of why an airport was created, landing facilities pose a particular set of issues in terms of maintaining and insuring they remain GA functional. Learn more.
III. Further Improve the Safety Record of General Aviation Through Pilot Education
The AOPA Air Safety Foundation provides world-class safety training and education and has reached the point where its financial stability is assured. ASF has demonstrated that thoughtful efforts combined with financial wherewithal can address successful challenges in GA. Learn more.
IV. Encourage More Individuals to Learn to Fly to Ensure General Aviation’s Future
AOPA must step-up its long-term efforts to build the pilot population. After reaching a peak of 827,000 in 1980, the number of licensed private pilots has shown a steady decrease. The number of student pilots has also dropped from the high of 210,000 in 1979 to 84,000 in 2006. In the past decade alone, the number of private pilots has decreased by 10%. Learn more.
