Flying on Her Own
By Bonnie Arnold 'Hill Country Community Journal'
Tivy High School (Kerrville, Texas) junior Brooke Bailey is an Air Force Junior ROTC Cadet 1st Lieutenant and is training to get a private pilot’s license. Bailey says she was inspired by her grandfather, a private pilot who owned a Cessna, and she plans to work for NASA in the future. She spent the summer learning to fly, taking advantage of a scholarship offered to high school students by Scott Belt at Learn2Fly, which pays for the physical exam, ground school, and the final test. The ground school included online courses to learn the mechanics of the airplane, different kinds of airspace, weather issues, and the basics of how to fly. She has been training in a Cessna 172 in a local airport, and will then take the written and oral tests. “There were some difficult parts, but I enjoyed it so much that it wasn’t hard,” she said. “And most of my friends thought it was pretty cool.”
