Florida ‘fly-in, drive-in’ canceled

Sport Aviation Showcase scheduled for November 2021

The one-day “Flyway to Highway” aviation and automobile event at Deland Municipal Airport-Sidney H. Taylor Field in Florida scheduled for January 30 has been scrubbed because of rising coronavirus infections, organizers announced January 15.

The news dashed the hopes of Sunshine State aviators ready to emerge from the winter doldrums. “We've watched the news, seen the infection rate keep up at a breathtaking pace, and we have seen the vaccination rate struggle along slowly,” an email from organizer Jana Filip said

Originally, Central Florida pilots and aviation enthusiasts were invited to visit Seamax Aircraft, Pipistrel, and other manufacturers’ ramp displays; test drive a Tesla electric automobile; and participate in a pancake breakfast sponsored by the local Experimental Aircraft Association chapter.

The latest setback comes several months after the postponement until November 2021 of the DeLand Sport Aviation Showcase.

We hate it as much as you do, but please know that your safety is our number one concern... and so we wait for better times,” the email continued. “We hope to see you all November 11-13th, 2021 ... if not sooner.”
