AOPA Waco was based at Sunbury, Pennsylvania
Aug. 11 AOPA member James J. MacVean has provided another link in our sweepstakes Waco UPF-7's history. He trained in the biplane in 1942 when it was based at Sunbury, Pennsylvania, as part of the Civilian Pilot Training program. The aircraft was used for secondary training, a course that focused on aerobatic maneuvers. Safair, a civilian flight school that was part of the government program, operated it. MacVean was housed in the barracks at Sunbury of what was formerly a Civilian Conservation Corps camp, another government program to provide jobs during the Great Depression of the 1930s and early 1940s. The airport remains in operation today.
