Handling In-Flight Emergencies
With a little caution, good judgment, and reasonable equipment, you can expect to fly safely for most of your piloting days. Once in a great while, you may run into a rare in-flight emergency. This is when knowing exactly what to do to solve the problem is most important. Rod will provide you with ideas for successfully avoiding and coping with some of the most serious airborne problems. To fly confidently means to be knowledgeable about potential problems and knowing their solutions.
- Speaker: Rod Machado
- Location: Seminar Tent
- Time: 9 a.m.-10 a.m.
Say it Right! Radio Communication
Increase your communication know-how with practical tips for communicating in today’s airspace. You’ll get straightforward advice on common pitfalls, emergencies, and challenges at both towered and nontowered airports. Plus, don’t miss the opportunity to take part in a Q&A session with an air traffic controller!

Top Five Mistakes Pilots Make
It’s sad but true. In an average year, three quarters of all accidents are caused by pilot error. And the mistakes that lead to those accidents? For the most part, they’re the same ones pilots have been making for decades. ASF’s latest seminar takes new aim at those old mistakes. We’ve identified the most common fatal errors pilots make and have put together a show that’s full of practical tips for avoiding them. From steering clear of weather to maneuvering safely and much more, if you’re looking to minimize your chances of being involved in a fatal accident, you’ll definitely want to attend this seminar!
- Speaker: Bruce Landsberg
- Location: Main Conference Room
- Time: 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
Why You Cannot See Traffic, and They Cannot See You
Dr. Fries will present practical methods of traffic avoidance. Principles of making your aircraft and location conspicuous will be discussed. Trigonometric-based scanning for traffic will be demonstrated using a water bottle clinometer. You can systematically minimize the risks of midair collisions. Water bottle clinometers are courtesy of Lopresti Speed Merchants of Vero Beach, Florida.
- Speaker: Dr. Ian Blair Fries
- Location: Seminar Tent
- Time: 11 a.m.-12 p.m.

Single-Pilot IFR
Short of an emergency, there’s probably no greater test of a pilot’s skill than flying single-pilot IFR. This seminar offers techniques to help you rise to the challenge. We’ll take a quick look at common IFR accident causes and important issues like lower than forecast weather, cockpit organization, avionics, and situational awareness.

What Every Pilot Should Know About FAA Enforcement
FAA enforcement actions for airspace violations have increased more than 150 percent in recent years. AOPA legal counsel, Yodice Associates, will cover the whole range of possible results of FAA investigation/enforcement and discuss the AOPA Legal Services Plan. Most specifically, the seminar will provide tips on dealing with administrative action and pilot certificate suspension, such as the “get out of jail free” aspect of the Aviation Safety Reporting Program. The seminar will provide guidance for the pilot including how he/she should respond to an FAA letter of investigation without making unnecessary damaging admissions.
- Speaker: Ron Golden and Kathy Yodice, Yodice Associates
- Location: Main Conference Room
- Time: 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m.
Pinch-Hitter®
Would your non-flying companion rather be a participant than a passenger? Could they step up to the plate in the unlikely event that you became incapacitated? This one-hour seminar covers need–to-know information on using the radio, navigating, and even landing the airplane in an emergency.
- Speaker: Mark Grady
- Location: Cafeteria
- Time: 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m.
Aviation Humor with Rod Machado
Be prepared to laugh and learn as Rod Machado introduces you to the lighter side of aviation. From a student who can’t keep his false teeth in his mouth to a pilot who can’t remember to remove the plastic owl from his vertical stabilizer before flight, you’re sure to have an afternoon filled with humor and wisdom.
- Speaker: Rod Machado
- Location: Seminar Tent
- Time: 2:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
