Club Facilities

Why I'm interested starting a club:
There has been a resurgence of interest in aviation over the past two years in my hometown, Sitka, Alaska.

Description of the hangar/clubhouse facilities:
While there is not currently a hangar for a flying club in Sitka, there are numerous opportunities to garner support from existing operations. The local FBO has generously supported activities run by the Southeast Alaska Aviation Association (SEAKAA), offering fuel discounts and airport support during the Annual Fly-In. Two Part 135 operations have offered support as well, providing space for meetings, lending financial assistance, and dedicating industry and safety expertise. The demonstrated support from these operations indicates a widespread interest in developing additional flying resources and opportunities. At Sitka Rocky Gutierrez Airport (PASI) an airport expansion project is underway, funded by the FAA. Among other things, this expansion will make possible the addition of a new seaplane haulout and provide expanded space for hangars.

Progress made towards starting the club:
The question of aircraft acquisition is a critical one that members of the community have begun to explore. There are several aircraft under consideration; there are two Cessna 172s that are practical options at this time. Additional prospects include a Piper Cherokee and a Cessna 180 on floats. There has been discussion about site selection for a clubhouse and hangar but no firm plans have been made. A group of committed individuals in town are looking forward to building and sustaining a strong and active flying club in the region.
