Club Facilities

Why I'm interested in starting a club:
A few other CFIs and I lamented about the situation of General Aviation in the Destin / Fort Walton Beach area of Florida. In our area, there are a few FBOs and even a military aero club that support pilot training. However, once pilots move on to the "recreational" phase of their pilot life-cycle, there are few options beyond renting a Cessna 172. There's no place in our area to be able to rent an IFR cruiser aircraft like a 182 or a Cherokee 6. There's also no place to rent a tailwheel aircraft. Rather than continue to complain, a small group of us CFIs decided to start a club to give rated pilots an organization that supports recreational flying beyond the Sky Hawk.

Description of the hangar/clubhouse facilities:
We currently have access to a space in a community hanger at Defuniak Springs (54J). However, we'd like to grow to having several aircraft spread over the airports in the area.

Progress made towards starting the club:
We already have formed a board of directors, written by-laws, and filed 501(c)(7) paperwork. We have convinced the owner of an Aeronca 7AC to lease his aircraft to us and we are in discussions with the owner of a Grumman Cheetah. We have established a facebook page, created a logo, spread club flyers at FBOs throughout the region, and had our first "get the word out" event at the Defuniak Springs Fly-In on April 27th. We still need to build a website.

Our end goal is to be an equity club with aircraft throughout the region, but we think the non-equity path will get us up and running faster and allow us to build the assets for the first aircraft purchase.
