Club Facilities

Why I'm interested in starting a club:
I have been an active member of a flying club located about an hour away for almost three years. I have always had the desire to run one eventually, and I would have liked to run the one I was a member of. I came to EKU and found that having any responsibility in a club an hour away plus flight school would be too much. Then, after tossing the idea of starting a flying club with a couple other aviation students, we are trying to make our dream a reality. A flying club at our airport would be a perfect location because it would allow all aviation students here to be members, and there are plenty of interested students. The university does not allow aircraft rental for any reason other than training, and we want to make a place for students to get extra practice from what they are working towards or just go on a cross country for fun. I know that a flying club would be successful here.

Description of the hangar/clubhouse facilities:
The Richmond airport is easily accessible. The FBO has extra rooms, where a clubhouse could be located. The airport is rapidly expanding with plans to build more ramp space for parking and more hangars for both the university and the public. Currently, there is ramp space for a couple aircraft if this club could be started. Eventually, the club could potentially have its own hangar with an included clubhouse.

Progress made towards starting the club:
So far, this is not much more than a dream. I have only discussed the idea with a couple friends who want to help get things going. Right now, we are working on finding funding sources and an aircraft to start with. We already have a potentially large member base, or at least people interested in membership. We have discussed the idea with the airport owner, who also runs the FBO, and he would allow us to use a room in the FBO as an office for a low rent rate. We are trying to get it started by Fall of 2013.
