If you fly a Luscombe, plan to join your fellow Luscombe pilots on May 19 for a “Day of Silvaire Disobedience.”
First it was the Swifts—now it’s the Luscombes. If you fly one of these classic taildraggers, you are cordially invited to team up with other Luscombe pilots around the world on May 19 and take to the skies.
That’s the date that organizer Barry Perkins of Monterey, Calif., has dubbed “A Day of Silvaire Disobedience” (get it?). “Our goal is to safely document all personal flights made that day by having pilots worldwide submit their flight stats, photos, and times for recording,” he said.
And the name of the event? Perkins says that the only thing Luscombe pilots will be demonstrating is their “unbridled enthusiasm for a wonderfully sporty design and the joy of being part of a greater community that supports one another in flying and maintaining these older certificated aircraft.” Perkins owns a 1948 Luscombe 8F.
Perkins said he was inspired to create the event after reading about the Swift pilots’ “Day of Domination,” held Nov. 4, 2012. More than 100 Swifts worldwide flew in that event. Like the Swift community, Luscombe owners are widespread and it’s tough to plan a centrally located fly-in location, Perkins said. He hopes pilots in the United States and the United Kingdom will turn out in droves.
If you fly a Luscombe on May 19, send your information to Perkins and put “Silvaire Disobedience” in the subject line. Include your name, aircraft N number, model, takeoff and landing, universal times, locations, and a small photo.

The next stop is Putrajaya, Malaysia, on May 17 and 18 for the 2014 Red Bill Air Race World Championship, following an “electrifying” contest in Rovinj, Croatia.
Discussing the pros and cons of possible routes, your CFII poses an unexpected question: “What is an air traffic clearance?”
The site of AOPA's first regional fly-in is at once modern and rich with history, and ready to welcome pilots.
