The University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) is enrolling students for its new bachelor of science degree in aviation for the fall 2013 semester. The program received initial approval in January and earned accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges in April.
Students will be able to obtain private, commercial, and instructor certificates plus an instrument rating while completing a four-year degree. The university is partnering with Maine Instrument Flight at Augusta State Airport to provide the flight instruction portion of the program.
UMA said low public tuition rates mean the program can be provided at a significantly lower cost than comparable programs around the nation. A student who completes the program with a minimum number of flight training hours would pay $87,882, according to UMA. That figure does not include living, travel, or housing expenses.
